Anatomia CZE: V.A.R.
I love our Czech brothers, even despite the problems that we had with them in the past. Poles do not "get" Czechs, as they adopted the German culture, which is why we often consider them traitors, while in reality, they just reject the Moravian roots, and are closer to germanised Bohemia. I myself am partial Czech and sometimes I wish I would live there, as it's allowed to drink beer on the streets. However, my uncurable patriotism forces me to stay here, instead of running away, no matter what.
Let's start with presenting crucial, important song - Prdel Evropy (Outskirts of Europe) from their first album,, "Personal Destruction" (1992):
As one can see, harsh self-criticism is a main trait of Slavic people. I do not share the sentiment in the song, as I consider Intermarium the greatest place to live in the world, but truth be told, it took decades to get here, and a lot of work to escape the russian boot.
The easiest way to summarize V.A.R. is to call them Czech Acid Drinkers (or Tankard for international readers), only rawer, more brutal, and no-nonsense attitude. V.A.R. goes Vratislavice Alcoholic Roar, after the brewery in this city. Beer is a very important drink in Czech Metal and shouldn't be ridiculed. There is a known story of how Tortharry was thirsty for beer after touring in South America and only getting cheap wine. There was almost a revolt.
From the visual side, V.A.R. tells the story of one murder. Each one of the albums contains one chapter of the story. In this case (their second album) the upcoming murderer prepares for his act. On the next albums we will see the corpse being thrown into the river, cops finding the body and doing the search, etc. Kinda dark trivia.
It's really important to not close yourself behind the short walls of ignorance. Music-wise it's a very evil Thrash with morbid sense of humor, which is exactly what you need right now, and I don't want to hear otherwise. Don't argue with me, okay?
As of today (2026), the band has 7 albums, and each one of them is fantastic, including demos. They are all avalaible on Pařát Magazine, about whom I shall write a post as well, as without them, I wouldn't know the full history of Czech efforts, as they would be either ignored or forgotten. As a representative, I picked their second album "Závislost" (Dependence) from 1995. It's really is a tough player, I assure you.
So yes, I recommend them, as it's 101 of brutal Thrash outside of your comfort zone. Listen to V.A.R. and drink beer!
