The Upstarts: Fulci

RETURN TO POLAND

Well, maybe not quite fresh enough, especially that half of the members were already members of Necrophilism, or Necrotorture at the end of century (I understand their obsession, after all this blog is called NECRO METAL). Nonetheless, this project fully belongs to the New School.

What makes them more interesting from the competition is the idea behind the music. The band managed to create their own personality, even if it relies on being a Lucio Fulci tribute band. Just in case someone doesn't know, Lucio Fulci was a grand master of Horrors and Thrillers. Anyway, their style is the epitome of eclectism: strong foundation in Cannibal Corpse (but the one with George Fischer at the helm), spiced with Deathcore (especially notable in video clips, where the vocalist waves his hands like some kinda rapper), but also capable of using Melodic Death Metal tricks and wait for it... film score. So it's not the kind of music that could have been conceived in the '90s.

The best example would be their third album "Exhumed Information", which consists of two halves: brutal display, and instrumental music, serving the function of a soundtrack. And this is what I was talking about - the band is not afraid to go full throttle in this area, as they also co-created a short movie, or collaborated with electronic band Talpah for a single, accompaned with an extra comic book.

As one can see, it's obviously targeted towards younger generations, who enjoy such tongue-in-cheek shout-outs. Another thing, the production is very modern in its digital clean sound, which might be a turn-off to some people (especially older ones). Personally, it doesn't bother me, but I'd rather mention it, just in case.

But what the band misses the most, are some iconic, catchy riffs. IMO, way to often they go the easy route and simple standards, and they don't try hard enough to come up with something memorable, and as a result, the gimmicks tend to be more interesting than the main course.

With that said, they're still worth your time.
