The Art of Metal: Kris Verwimp

Recently, I got lazy, and I still don't have the mojo back, so for this week exclusively, I will release another batch (in english only, to save time) about the greatest Metal artists of all time.

Opening trivia: born on the same day as Dan Seagrave, which was "whatever" day, as I don't really care that much to check it. The guy is a Belgian, which is nowadays known as "The Headquarter of Doom", namely EU's capitol.

His most acclaimed work is the one he did for Absu. Albeit for years I recognized him mostly from Brutal Death Metal, like Vital Remains, Prejudice or Shadowbreed, Among his most celebrated works belong numerous covers for SUIDAKRA, Ceremonial Castings (absolutely shitty American symphonic black metal band), Folkearth / Folkodia (a collective of various Folk / Pagan musicians working together with a constantly changing line-up), Horna, Manegarm, Marduk, Crom, Deviser, early Enthroned, Bewitched, Sathanas, Vintersorg, Sear Bliss (that Hungarian folk / black band in which Vic Records invested in early on), Bütcher, early Dark Fortress, Evoke, Paths of Possession (that band that Brunelle formed after being fired from Morbid Angel).

Personally, I like the cover he did for After All (never heard the band, though), and the rather forgotten Cirith Gorgor (to not confuse them with the legendary Cirith Ungol).

He also had one-offs for some truly legendary albums of Ancient Rites, Graveland, Nocturnal & Nocturnal Breed, Melechesh Lord Belial, Hypnosia, Old Man's Child, The Darkening, Goreaphobia, Caducity, Desaster, Angelcorpse, Nagelfar (the re-release sucks ass) - you heard of these bands, didn't you? Good. The portfolio is more than impressive. He did a lot of work (in this order) for Osmose, Century Media, Napalm, Hammerheart, Metal Blade, and every other notable Metal label ever.

Among his worst, I would say, is the stuff he did for Ice Vinland, Mistur, Mystica, Adorned Blood, Allied Forces, Gloryful, Exmortus, Cromlech, Entropy. Bleh, some really unappealing art.

The general style and theme of his art is focused mostly on Viking / Epic battlefields, marching of the army, even if majority of the bands he covered are (Melodic) Black / Death Metal extremities. Knights, evil forces, forests at night, ancient lore, and sometimes a satan with big cock (or bare naked ladies), are the name of the game of this artist. So in a way, he tends to be very repetitive. But hey, even if the covers are minor variations of the theme, they do look spectacular, with a high amount of mysticism.

Crimson Falls kinda falls out of his usual style, as it presents more modern, techno take of a Thrash Metal cover. Sometimes he does channel the Seagrave feel, so maybe it wasn't a coincidence that they were born on the same day.
