Anatomia CAN: Aggression

Albeit I knew the band for some time, I didn't really pick it up, until an opportunity appeared. A friend of mine, with whom I am trading CDs, had in his offer Aggression's whole discography (in a mint) for a really cheap price (majority of which was released by Xtreem Records, just to make a point about that label, btw), and after hesitating, I thought "well, they formed in the 80s, at worst they'll be mediocre".
And holyy crap, I did not expect so many feels. First things First. For some reason, every album by Aggression (including a compilation of their demos) starts with a letter "F". I mention this now, before I'll Forget. Anyway, their First album ("Full Treatment") was kinda okayish. It was released in 1987 and has THAT year's sound, namely Deathrash. Nothing to write home about, but if they had released only this one, they would already be considered legendary. They also had an unreleased album, recorded in 1986, which is nowadays called "Forgotten Skeleton", and Frankly, it's actually much better than their "proper" debut, as it has a little of Speed Metal in its vein.
Now, Fast Forward, and after their "Fractured Psyche Demons" compilation of demos, the band decided to return. Honestly, I am sick of the constant reunions with diminishing returns. But, something interesting happened... "Fragmented Spirit Devils" (2016, pictured above) turned out to be not only an improvement, but it also outclassed their 80s music, which Frankly, never happens. In every department, the album was simply superior. Better, more adventurous songwriting, much bigger variety of songs, more influences. Aggression became a literal embodiment of Metal. There is extreme side of Death / Thrash / Black, there is motorcycle side of Power / Speed / Heavy, there are some variants of Doom / Gothic / even Symphonic, not to mention some Punk grinding and Avantgarde / Progressive elements. The only genre they were missing was Jazz Metal, but otherwise, everything was there. And to add insult to injury, it all gelled well together. There was no Feeling of any disjointment, and the sound itself had this retro feel, without sacrificing clarity.
I can write and write peans about how great this album is, but it's not like you will believe me, and there's the catch... the band released more. "Feels like Punk, Sounds like Thrash" (2018) was a move into a more Crossover area, and while it wasn't as great as the previous masterpiece, it was still pretty rad. Then there was a modest, but tasty Thrashy-oriented EP "Field of Nightmares" (2021), Followed by an underrated "From Hell with Hate" (2022), which while Focusing more on Horror / Death Metal style, with the epic "Let's Burn this Church to the Ground" having this Misfits / Bauhaus New Wave overtone, it was a huge barrel of Fun. When the band has a Fun with their music, you know you're For a treat. Mind my words, music should be entertaining. It's okay to be challenged with something experimental, but First and Foremost, music should give some joy and smile to our Faces.
And when I thought the band can't surprise me even more, the next year they released "Frozen Aggressors" (2023), and I said "enough, I have to write about them immediatelly!". This particular album starts with a great epic shredding intro "C.H.U.D. Invasion" (it's a reference to a horror movie, not a political meme), and it doesn't let go, not until the Fat lady sings. This one is more Focused on Speed / Power / Motorhead Groove, and while the band doesn't abandon growling (like in the hilarious "Satanic Cult Gangbang"), its main theme seems to be the 80s Speed side of their spectrum. It's also the closest to "Fragmented Spirit Devils" in regards to quality of the songwriting, albeit said album is still unmatched and their best. Still, the way that the band crafts their song makes me shed a tear of joy. It's pure Heavy Metal spirit.
"Can you dig it?" asks the singer, and I say "yes, yes we can". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, it's a gem coming from the most unsuspecting of places.

Aggression, a sprawa Polska
Są takie zespoły, które jakoś odkładasz na potem, bo nie jesteś przekonany, że będą cię w stanie czymś zaskoczyć. I tak trochę na czuja zainwestowałem flotę w płytki Aggression, spodziewając się co najwyżej przyzwoitego Thrashu, który owszem, będzie fajny, ale nie będzie mi dupy urywał.
I faktycznie, ich stare dokonania dokładnie właśnie takie są. Dobre, ale bez większego polotu. I chociaż raz w życiu stało się tak, że powrót kapeli zza światów okazał się być strzałem w dziesiątkę do tego stopnia, że ich stare płyty równie dobrze mogłyby nie istnieć, bo ich nowsze są aż tak dobre. No najzwyczajniej zakochałem się w tej muzyce i aż żal, że nie mogę wziąć z nią ślubu.
Każda z ich płyt za temat główny bierze sobie inną odmianę Metalu, a to Punk / Crossover, a to Death, a to Thrash, a ich ostatni krążek ma wyraźny sznit Speed / Hard Rock. Grupa żongluje stylami, jak rasowa prostytutka jądrami. Żaden klimat nie jest obcy grupie, a i oni sami chętnie próbują zaskakiwać słuchaczami co to odważniejszymi pomysłami. Jak czytaliście moje wypociny po angielsku, to tam bardziej szczegółowo nakićkałem pełen obraz, więc nie będę się powtarzać.
Natomiast to, co jest chyba najważniejsze w tym wszystkim jest to, że mimo dość wysokiej produkcyjności (w latach 2016-2023 zaliczyli 4 płyty i 1 EP), nie tylko nie ma zauważalnego spadku formu, ale ta muza autentycznie cieszy. Zasługa w tym przede wszystkim tego, że grupa nie jest w ciemię bita i rozumie, że obojętnie, czy się bierzesz za Awangardę, czy Gangsta Rap, musisz umieć stworzyć taki utwór, który będzie się prosił o replay. I każda z ich płyt ma taki numer, a właściwie, to ma ich wiele, ale to, jaki się wam spodoba, będzie zależało trochę od waszego gustu.
Czy jest to strawne? Oj tak, nie miałem żadnej zgagi po takim koktajlu i miksie, więc nie musicie się bać. To nie jest zespół, który sprawia wrażenie priorytetowego, ale wystarczy, że sobie odpalicie przede wszystkim albo "Frozen Aggressors", lub "Fragmented Spirit Devils", to będzecie w wuj zadowoleni. "From Hell with Hate" też tak naprawdę miażdży i ma swoje mocne punkty. Jedynie "Feels like Punk, Sounds like Thrash" się średnio udał, bo za bardzo jest to jednak hołd dla Punk'a, a z tym różnie bywa. Od strony tekstowej, należy to traktować z przymrużeniem oka - jest hołd, ale grupa lubi troszkę śmieszkować, nie inaczej jak Acid Drinkers. I chyba takie porównanie będzie trafione, bo oba zespoły kochają Metal i nie bały się rozwijać swojej formuły.
Warto jednak poszerzać horyzonty, co będę chyba powtarzał przy każdym moim poście i słuchać rzeczy nietuzinkowych, choć utrzymanych w piosenkowej konwencji. Warto też dać szansę tym szalonym Kanadyjczykom, ten naród to jednak zawsze miał ułańską fantazję, zupełnie inaczej od ich drętwych sąsiadów z USA.
