Labels Spotlight: Xtreem (+ Collector Corner bonus)

 

ENGLISH SIDE

Dave Rotten, the man, the myth, the legend. The guy basically equals Spanish Death Metal. Xtreem Records is his third attempt for a music label. His previous two, had middling success. First, was legendary Drowned Productions, which ruled the early Death Metal underground, and released both Spanish bands, as well as tapes and singles by international bands. There was this nice collection of their singles this year, take a look:

  

Featuring Purtenance, Immortal Fate, Darkified, Imprecation, Deteriorot, Catacomb AMONG OTHERS. Surprised? Shouldn't be, everything by Drowned was pure gold. Among the most cult, is the classic split by Cartilage / Altar (yup, this one)

Then, afterwards, was Repulse Records. It was pretty short-lived and I myself have only one CD from them, namely The Mist - Gottverlassen, mostly because it was promoted, as a band by Jair Guedez, ex-Sepultura.

And finally, in 2002, Xtreem records was unleashed, and thankfully, it exists to this day.

What I forgot to mention, is that Dave Rotten himself participated in numerous cool projects, among which were Avulsed and Christ Denied. I probably should talk about beef between Rotten's Avulsed and Garchitorena's Fermento, but we're not a gossip site about drama queens, are we? With that said, Garchitorena can be classified as Spanish turbo-Danzig in regards to muscles, and attitude, which probably doesn't result in him having many friends.

Xtreem is responsible for numerous re-releases and new stuff by B-list talent (Rottrevore? Purtenance (again)? Demigod? Adramalech? Aggression? Anialator (my new find this year, highly recommended)? Deteriorot? Killing Addiction? Soulskinner? Sarkasm? As well as for many of Rogga's projects, mostly early Paganizer (it seems that it was Dave who discovered Rogga), Ribspreader, Dead Sun, Revolting, and Putrevore (obviously, since in this one, Rogga shares with Dave).

And also, Xtreem invests in their national bands, like Absorbed, Unbounded Terror, or Aposento (which I do personally love a lot), or equally awesome Tenebro. In a way, they do seem to serve a function, where they both revive some cult stuff, as well as breathe some wind into the wings of the obscure bands and giving them a second chance.

Hell, Detente themselves had their second album re-released on Xtreem to no fanfare, because majority of Metalheads are not really that well-versed in their Metal, and they focus mostly on well-known stuff, and little else. Who's Detente? You can read about them here. But those who have ears, and some knowledge about the scene, for something else than hipster black metal shoegaze, will probably agree with me. There's not much to complain, other than sometimes it's hard to get the stuff, as either people tend to buy everything out (some Aposento repress would be more than welcomed), or the shops are not ordering enough of the items, to satisfy everyone.

I am aware, that this sounds like a big fat advert (for which I am not being paid for 😭), but if you want to read something more critical, you can go there. To be fair, I'm not really sure what I should complain about, to be honest... But if you have an idea about what aspect I should bash, feel free to comment.

Oh wait, I'm not really a fan of their recent digipack releases of various demos, but then again, it can be safely skipped, as majority of them were already included on their classic re-releases (or probably will be released elsewhere). So there's that. Enojy.

POLISH SIDE

Mam nadzieję, że chciało wam się czytać wersję angielską, bo zamiast się powtarzać, dodam kilka dodatkowych zmiennych. 

Właściwie, to jest jedna rzecz, do której można się przyczepić, aczkolwiek, nie jest to coś poważnego. Generalnie, książeczki przy wszelakich, współczesnych płytach, bardzo często są robione na odwal się. Np. takie nowe Dark Tranquillity ma liryki na czarnym tle i żeby było dosadniej, większość wersji nie ma wszystkich grafik stworzonych na płytę, są wręcz okrojone. Paradise Lost też niespecjalnie się stara, co sprawia, że zaczynam wątpić w sens kupowania płyt, skoro to jest tak naprawdę gloryfikowany plastik w pudełku. Nie rozumiem takiej polityki, ani takiego podejścia. To trochę jakby nienawidzić swoich własnych klientów. Książeczki, jak nazwa wskazuje, powinni się jakoś prezentować okazale, jak np. w przypadku płyt Watain. Dlatego też coraz częściej ograniczam nowe płyty, a wolę inwestować w re-edycje, bo tam przynajmniej dostanę pełnoprawny produkt. Vic Records, Dark Symphonies, High Roller, Divebomb itd. kupuję w ciemno, bo wiem, że nawet jak to jest Power Metal, to będzie prezentować poziom zarówno muzyczny, jak pod względem poligrafii. Stare Century Media też było fajne, jak robiło kampanię Death Metalową. Ale te czasy chyba minęły.

Xtreem generalnie nie jest jakąś bogatą wytwórnią, więc stosują zasadę, którą średnio lubię, mianowicie, używają fragmentów okładki płyty jako tła liryków. Dodają jednak konkretne, profesjonalnie przemyślane zdjęcia zespołu, więc ostatecznie, design nie jest może zły, ale fakt faktem, średnio lubię takie rozwiązanie. Jest to jednak mniej irytujące niż czarne tło, więc się nie czepiam, ale zawsze sobie śmieszkuję, że wiem co zobaczę w środku, zanim otworzę knigę. Mam jednak nieodparte wrażenie, że jest to zależne w 100% od danego zespołu, a nie złej woli wytwórni, bo są i takie grupy, które lubią machnąć jakąś ekstra grafikę, albo design.

Ot, taka refleksja kolekcjonera. Ogólnie jednak, Xtreem się opłaca, bo niejednokrotnie nie żałują bonusów przy re-edycjach i są stosunkowo tani, w porównaniu do innych firm. Nie pamiętam, abym był kiedykolwiek rozczarowany. Jeden niepokojący trend, to że nowe wersje ich starych re-edycji nie mają bonusowych demówek, jak w przypadku Dissect, ale jak znam życie, pewnie się to pojawi w jakiejś formie. Na początku lat '00, to firmy ładowały bonusy, żeby ludzie chcieli kupować. Teraz to wszystko jest wydawane osobno - osobno płyta, osobno kompilacja demówek, czasem jakiś ekstra singiel (jak ostatnio Pentacle zrobiło z "Archaic Undead Fury", które winno było być dodane jako bonus tracki na którąś z płyt). Tego typu ukierunkowanie na kolekcjonerstwo skończy się w pewnym momencie wielkim krachem, ale to już nie mój problem.
