Anatomia SWE: The Madness of Rogga Johansson

Today (dzisiaj) we'll do an experimental post, where we will mix Polish and English, due to the huge subject that we are covering. In italics, you'll find quick Polish translations, but the main text will be in English. It's something of an inside joke, as in Poland, we have something that could be called as simultaneous narrator / lector instead of dubbing in movies, or tv shows, when you have a guy reading aloud the translated dialogue along to original audio track. It seems to be something of an eastern Europe phenomenon.

Rogga Johansson is not a person you have to introduce to anyone, who listens to Death Metal. This guy is basically a one-man army. An institution even. He started early in the late 90s, with his obscure projects, and he probably wouldn't be known without the help of the almighty Dan Swano.

Roggi nie trzeba przedstawiać, to człowiek instytucja Szwedzkiego Death Metalu. Zaczynał jak każdy, w latach '90 ze swymi projekcikami i skończyłby w zapomnieniu, gdyby nie współpraca z Dan'em Swano.

Not many people remember nowadays, but Rogga did vocals for the farewell album of Edge of Sanity - Crimson II. Swano returned the favor with starting a collabo with Rogga that was called Demiurg, with whom, they recorded 3 albums, as well as helping him with Ribspreader.

Niewielu już pamięta, że to zaczęło się od gościnnym wystąpieniu na pożegnalnym albumie Edge of Sanity. Swano podziękował za współpracę tworząc projekt z Roggą, zwanym Demiurg, gdzie strzelili sobie ze 3 płytki i pomoc przy Ribspreaderze.

The next step would be the relative success of Paganizer with its first few albums, albeit one would argue that it was Ribspreader, which is probably the most famous of all Rogga's projects. Since then, Rogga got batshit insane and started doing collabs with literally everyone, including shady labels like Metal Bastard (fuck this rip-off label, along with its derivates like Goremaster, Blue Line, Steel Breaker, among others). There will be plenty of the dubious releases by them, that either contained repackaged songs from various Rogga projects, or some fake songs recorded by the boss label.

Kolejnym krokiem było udane wypromowanie Paganizer, aczkolwiek śmiem twierdzić, że największą sławę dał mu Ribspreader. Od tamtej pory Rogga zwariował i trzaska płytę za płytą, współpracując ze wszystkimi, z kim się da, nawet z gównianymi scam-labelami jak Metal Bastard (jebał ich pies i ich odnogi). Wiele z ich "wydawnictw" zawiera randomowe tracki z różnorakich projektów sprzedawane jako nowe, albo fejkowe utwory nagrane przez szefa firmy. Są w każdym razie, w jakiś sposób trefne.

The number of projects grows steadily over the years, and Rogga doesn't seem to slow down. Hence this post. This is an encyclopedia covering ALL of his projects (including ambient stuff), and to make them digestible for human beings.

I. TIER - MAIN BANDS (Zespoły Główne)

Here we will focus of the main bread and butter. Czyli główne źródło dochodów Roggi.

PAGANIZER

The most obvious choice. Started as Terminal Grip, which was actually more Industrial. Paganizer on their debut played Melodic Death Metal, very unlike to what Rogga would later perform, much closer to Dark Tranquillity and early At The Gates, than your typical Entombed worship, for which this project later got known. Kinda funny how they have more compilations with outtakes than actual albums.

Oczywista oczywistość. Zaczynali jako Terminal Grip, które było bardziej Industrialowe. Paganizer na debiucie grało Melo-Death i to w zupełnie innym stylu od tego, z którego kojarzymy Roggę. Dużo bliżej do Dark Tranquillity i starego At The Gates, niż typowego czczenia Entombed, z którego potem był znany. Mają chyba więcej kompilacji z odrzutami, niż studyjnych albumów.

RIBSPREADER

Second choice, albeit IMO the more popular. Your standard Rogga music. The project is actually as old as Paganizer, albeit it didn't have any official stuff, until XXI century. The music is anti-Jesus topically, albeit it had a short conceptual stint involving fictional serial killers duo.

Druga oczywistość i wg mnie, bardziej znana. Typowy Rogga. Projekt jest równie stary co Paganizer, aczkolwiek pierwsze oficjalne nagrania wyszły dopiero w XXI wieku. Muzyka jest docelowo anty-Jezusowa, ale zdarzyło się zrobić konceptualne albumy o fikcyjnej parze seryjnych zabójców. Zdecydowanie jego najlepsza rzecz.

REVOLTING

It's hard to tell whether Rogga joined the project, which started as two guys playing in a band called Nekropolis, or if he just hijacked the concept. The main theme of Revolting were gross Horror Movies, alas C'thulhu also got involved, and the music varied between standard Rogga and some melancholic cultured stuff featuring piano.

Ciężko powiedzieć, czy Rogga dołączył do gostków, którzy grali jako Nekropolis, czy po prostu przejął projekt. Głównym tematem Revolting są obleśne horrory, aczkolwiek C'thulhu też się pojawia, a sama muzyka błąka się między standardem, a okazjonalną melancholią z fortepianem.

DEAD SUN

Technically, as old as Paganizer and Ribs, albeit again, wasn't really active until decade later. The point of Dead Sun is to play more atmospheric, Death 'n' Roll riffs. Also, had 3 separate compilations collecting the digital singles around 2018-2019, which are sometimes mistakenly listed as separate albums.

Technicznie mówiąc, równie stare co jego główne dzieci, ale znów, nie było to specjalnie aktywne aż stał się sławny. Celem Dead Sun jest granie z naciskiem na atmosferę i Death 'n' Rollowymi riffami. THOSE WHO BRING THE TORTURE

Started as a Gore Death Metal with some other prolific musicians, over time it developed more into an introspective band and a testing ground for some of the ideas, which Rogga would later use for other projects.

HUMANITY DELETE 

Started more as a one-off project focusing on Grindcore with the help of Hooded Menace, and became its own solo thing, and the album are released sporadically, without some unifying theme. It has a thick sound.

Zaczęte jako jednorazowy projekt z naciskiem na Grindcore z pomocą Hooded Menace, ale stało się czymś solowym, a albumy wydawane są sporadycznie i bez jakiegoś wspólnego mianownika. Brzmienie jest wyjątkowo tłuste.

MEGASCAVENGER 

This project is special twofolds. First of all, the main idea behind it, is that each song features as a guest, different famous Death Metal vocalist. Two, the band became focused more on Sci-Fi themes.

Ten projekt jest specjalny z dwóch powodów. Po pierwsze, na każdym tracku występuje gościnnie inny znany Death Metalowy wokalista. Po drugie, grupa z czasem poszła w kierunku Sci-Fi. 

ROGGA JOHANSSON

Yes, Rogga goes totally solo-solo and does everything, including timpani... And it actually works. A little more orchestral, ambitious and developed from your usual Rogga fare.

Tak, Rogga idzie solo po całości i gra na wszystkim, łącznie z klarnetem... I to nawet się sprawdza. Jest to nieco bardziej orkiestralnie, ambitne i rozwinięte od reszty jego wysrywów.

DOWN AMONG THE MEN

A surreal, cybertech project featuring some Crust Punk influence, made with Dave Ingram.

Surrealny, cyberpunkowy projekt z Dave Ingramem. 

ECHELON

Another project with Dave Ingram, only more dedicated to occult and ancient evil.

Kolejny projekt z Ingramem, ale tym razem bardziej nastawiony na okultyzm i pradawne zło. 

EYE OF PURGATORY

Something of a false start, as it features the early collabo with Goregang members (with whom he would also played in Massacre, and who, to add insult to injury, also play in Inhuman Condition lol). Rogga would reuse some of the ideas for other projects.

Coś w rodzaju falstartu, bo jest to wczesne kolabo z typami od Goregang (z którymi później grał w Massacre i żeby było śmieszniej, którzy również udzielają się w Inhuman Condition). Niektóre pomysły (i riffy będą użyte ponownie w innych projektach).

FURNACE

A project with Svensson (who also participated in way too many bands, and with whom Rogga apparently also did Battle Axis). Furnace goes between your standard Swedeath, and some early 90s old school.

Kolejny projekt ze Svenssonem (co to też cierpi na ADHD i z którym to Rogga niby zrobił Battle Axis). Furnace waha się między szwedzką szkołą, a klimatami lat '90.

GAUNTLET RULE

Another project with Svensson. Classic Heavy Metal.I suspect that songs from their sessions were later re-used / remixed by Metal Bastard for the Battle Axis album.

Kolejny projekt ze Svenssonem. Staromodny Heavy Metal. Podejrzewam, że niepublikowane utwory, albo przerobione wersje później zostały wykorzystane przez Metal Bastard na "album" Battle Axis.

GHOULHOUSE

One of many projects with Stuvemark. The covers remind me of 80s horror posters.

GRISLY

Project done for Xtreem and later taken over by Vic. Battle Death Metal in vein of Bolt Thrower, with Stuvemark and Blomberg (frequent Rogga collaborator), among others.

HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY

One of many projects with Hrubovcak, albeit this one feels like it's the main one. Horror Metal?

JOHANSSON & SPECKMANN

For some reason, Master himself decided to record some albums together. They're actually pretty good.

LEPER COLONY

Collabo with Morgoth singer, with the help of Stuvemark.

During 2020-2024 Rogga helped Kam Lee revive this band, but not to acclaim of fans.

Solo project with Xtreem head honcho Dave Rotten. It's one of the superior projects overall.

The main guy from Crematory decided to start a side-project, and Rogga helps him with that.

A relatively succesfull Kam Lee project with Rogga, dedicated to Lovecraft works.

Another Bolt Thrower-esque project with Ohlsson (numerous other Rogga projects) and Svensson.

Rogga appeared on EP, but wasn't lucky enough to be on their seminal album "Minotaur".

One of the first Kam Lee projects that brought him out of retirement. Rogga somehow left this project.

Pretty cool and short-lived project dedicated to Zombie Apocalypse-themed movies.

Has the honor of being the first official spin-off of Paganizer, and as such was later re-released under this moniker. More US-oriented stylewise.

DEMIURG

Early, and one of the best Rogga projects, done with Dan Swano himself.

Short-lived experimental Grind-acoustic project, supplement to Bloodgut.

Side-project spearheaded by Hooded Menace guy, with Rogga being co-writer. Industrial / Thrash.

High-profile project with Bob Bagchus (Asphyx, Soulburn).

MONSTROUS

Mysterious project featuring Stass members and two other guys, who seems to appear in every Rogga project. Considering it was mostly released by Cianeto and Metal Bastard, there is a reasonable doubt about its legitimacy, but it does sound real enough to be included here.

Could have been a pretty respected ongoing project, but seems to be abandoned. Unlike others, this one is dedicated to US Brutal Death Metal of the late '90s / early 00s.

Mógł to być jeden z bardziej rozpoznawalnych projektów, ale chyba został zapomniany. W przeciwieństwie do innych, jest on skupiony na amerykańskim Brutalnym graniu z przełomu wieków. 

SKELETAL SPECTRE

What started as another, derivative Swedeath project, morphed into Traditional Doom Death with female vocals. If there is only one project by Rogga you have to listen, it's this one.

Co zaczęło się jako kolejny, nieciekawa podróbka Swedeath'u, przemieniło się w Tradycyjny Doom Death z kobiecymi wokalami. Jeśli jest jeden projekt Roggi, na który warto postawić, to jest to ten.

STYGIAN DARK 

Project with Dave Ingram done for Old Shadows records.

SVITJOD

Weird project done with some nonames (surprisingly enough) that has more of a Viking / Melo-Death / Black Metal vibe.

SWARMING

Classy, Grinding Death with Hooded Menace guy. They also did Lobotomy Dept.

THE CLEANER AND MR. FILTH'S VAN MURDERS

Spin-off to the two albums by Ribspreader, which were dedicated to this concept. Probably featuring outtakes and others.

THE SKELETAL

Basically The Grotesquery + Hooded Menace guitarist. Released under pseudonyms.

TO DESCEND

Probably created to bring Jens Johansson (Megaslaughter) out of the hiding. Svensson and Blomberg helped as well. Typical and unassuming old school Death with grade-C riffs.

Prawdpodobnie stworzony, aby wyciągnąć Johanssona (Megaslaughter) z ukrycia. Svensson i Blomberg też pomagali. Typowy i zwyczajny Death Metal z miernymi riffami.

TO THE GALLOWS

What was supposed to be a tribute to Bathory, later became ambiguous War Metal. Their only album was recorded as a duo, with Henri Sattler of God Dethroned fame.

Co miało być tribute'm dla Bathory, przemieniło się w niejednoznaczny War Metal. Ich jedyny album został zrobione we dwójkę, na spółę z Henri Sattler'em (God Dethroned).

Rogga wrote the second official album of this forgotten Master project. Originally it was supposed to be released as Johansson / Speckmann duo, but was changed to this, for marketing purposes. Still, one of the better releases overall.

Dubious project, apparently done for Metal Bastard, in Power Metal style. There was a controversy, as the sham of a label promoted this as Helloween-Hammerfall project. High proballity of being fake.

Wątpliwy projekt, zrobiony dla Metal Buców, w stylu Power Metalowym. Były jaja, bo pseudo-wytwórnia promowała to jako projekt Helloween-Hammerfall. Wysokie prawdopodobieństwo, że jest to fejkowy album.

CATACOMB

Apparently, formed in 2000, and their debut has 2 CD. Probably taken from various other projects.

Rzekomo, powstałe w 2000 i debiut ma aż 2 CD. Prawdopodobnie tracki wzięte z innych projektów.

FORMALDEHYDIST
