Remember the Heroes: Dawn Crosby

I decided to spotlight another fallen star, Dawn Crosby, the vocalist of Detente and Fear of God, both seminal bands.

Detente was a pretty promising band from LA, playing a specific Speed / Crossover style with proto-growling. They had a classic album "Recognize No Authority" in the fruitful year of 1986. Album had some pretty fast tunes like "Shattered Illusions", "Life is Pain", or "Holy War". After Dawn left the band in 1989 they split up and returned back in 2007, and released another album in 2010, even more Death Metal-oriented. The Plasmatics influences are obvious, but it's less theatrics and more threat-and-trics. Pretty original and in your face, highly recommended.

Her second band, Fear of God was more personal, darker and experimental, music composed of various Heavy Metal genres. She again created highly original music, and became probably an inspiration for galls like Otep or Crisis. "Within the Veil" from 1991 had a mainstream support and was succesfull, alas the personal problems kinda slashed the promising career. The band re-grouped and with a new line-up recorded "Toxic Voodoo" in 1994 that was straight up entering Death Metal realm.

After the tragic demise of Dawn, the rest of the band recorded another album, as F.O.G., with more accented Gothic influences. "Jezabel's Dreams" was released in 1999, and while not as good as the previous records, it still stands out and is a proper tribute to their deceased teammate.

It's worth mentioning the vocal style of Dawn, as she was notorious for her switching between bloodthirsty growls and vulnerable, girly singing. She obviously preferred the former, but combined together created an unforgettable impression.

Suffice to say, there are video reports of how dawn worked in the studio, as well as many interviews and dedicated youtube channels. I certainly will not discuss the demons she fought, as we all battle our demons alone, and sometimes, we get destroyed by them.

Rest in Peace Dawn, hope you're in a better place than this planet Earth.
