Metal Cinema: Deathgasm (2015)

 

Due to too many posts waiting in the queue, I decided to release them this week in the global language only - Polscy czytelnicy wybaczcie!

Who would have known that one of the greatest movie representing Metalheads as protagonists would be from New Zealand, of all places? I present to you this total classic, on it's 10th anniversary nonetheless.

Story goes as follows: young fan of Metal starts a band with another Metalhead, not unlike Wagner Lamounier did with Max Cavalera, naming it Deathgasm (hence the title of this movie). One day, they explore an abandoned house of a legendary musician, who turns out to be not really that abandoned, as they meet the musician in person, who gives them a gift - a mysterious album.

It turns out that the album is actually cursed, as it can summon demons, and is highly sought after by a satanic cult. The band obliviously makes a mistake by playing said album, unleashing the demonic apocalypse. What happens afterwards you have to see for yourselves.

The movie was directed by Jason Lei Howden and it was his directorial debut. To my disappointment, he doesn't have a profile page on Metal-Archives, which he certainly deserves, alas, maybe he should co-operate with some bands? Anyway, you can find photos of the guy on the internet, and he certainly represents the Metal Culture properly.

I would say that the movie is more of a Comedy with Horror elements, than the opposite, but there is some romance, some buddy moments, family drama and plenty of hilarious gore. When the action rampes up, the blood splatters left and right. I am aware that not every one might like this type of humor, but I don't care. I do remember that the first time I've seen this masterpiece, my journey into the obscure Metal lore only started, but it felt great back then to see on screen some of the albums and trivia that wasn't obviously obvious things.

Overall, it's a poseur-killing movie by Metalheads for Metalheads, without any bullshit, and as such, deserves the utmost respect. It did manage to reach a cult status. RECOMMENDED!
