The Upstarts: Suffering Sights

Parkcrest was supposed to be the final text this week, but I managed to finish this one as well, so have another extra feature. It's also not all I have in-the-waiting, but it have to suffice for now. Have a double-double feature.

As I mentioned not so long ago when I wrote about Parkcrest, Chile wasn't known for spectacular vocalists, a perception that I changed when I started discovering the younger bands. So let me introduce another one such bright star.

Suffering Sights might not win the award for the greatest band name ever. Neither the title of their debut album "When Sanity Becomes Insanity" sounds clever  - quite the opposite, albeit I do have an affection for the good ole South American broken english (I do hope that mine sounds okay enough to be comprehensible). Their style is also not in any way groundbreaking. They play no-frills, meat 'n' potatoes Death Metal the Schuldiner way as the basis, but peppered with obscure stuff like Insanity, Mass Psychosis, Torchure, and so on.

But there is one thing that seriously took me by the storm - yes, you guess it - the execution of their music.

I have no idea how I came upon this album, but from the very first seconds I've heard it, I knew that this was it - a love at first note. And I liked it well enough that I literally immediately bought the physical copy on the internet. It's the first and the last time I did this (so far). Everything gelled together seamlessly, like a well oiled machine. The sinister riffs, the tempo, they way songs flowed from one to another. It just felt complete. Sure, the album does lose a little steam near the end, but overall, maybe only Terravore managed to ignite such strange excitement in me recently.

One thing I really respect about this band is their statement in their liner notes, which amounts to "we achieved what we dreamed of, in spite of the haters". I have no idea what kind of hardships they had to endure to release this masterpiece, but I will always aplaud such attitude.

Here, have a sip of quality Death Metal.
